Reverend Mary Johnson is the daughter of the late, Rev. and Mrs. Rollin Hamilton, the sister of Lennie Gillespie, Mollie Miller, and Edith Leeper. Mary completed her high school diploma in Greeneville, Tennessee being the only African American student in her graduating class of over 125 students in May of 1967.

In November 1986, Rev. Johnson was elected by members of the Covenant Baptist Church to serve as a Deacon. In January 1987, she was ordained by Pastors Dennis and Christine Wiley to the Diaconate and later was named Diaconate Chairperson. In addition to serving as Diaconate Chairperson for 15 years, Rev. Johnson has served within numerous other ministries at Covenant Baptist United Church of Christ to include Christian Education, Nurture, Worship and Intercession, and Evangelism and Outreach.

She received an AA degree from Morristown College in Morristown, Tennessee, a BA degree in Sociology from Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee, a Master of Social Work degree in Clinical Social Work from the University of Tennessee and has attended Wesley Theological Seminary and also Howard University School of Divinity.

Rev. Johnson worked as a Clinical Social Worker for the District of Columbia’s Public Health Department and Family Medical Counseling Services Inc. for over 44 years. During this period, she was the Field Instructor Supervisor for MSW Interns from Howard University and the University of Maryland’s Schools of Social Work. Rev. Johnson joyfully entered retirement in May 2017. Throughout Rev. Johnson’s Social Work career, it has been her mission to serve and empower the men, women, and children regardless of background, to help them become all they have been created by God to become, and also to simply share the love of Jesus Christ.

Rev. Johnson’s favorite scripture, which has been a guide for her throughout her life, is Proverbs 3:5, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

Reverend Johnson is the grateful and proud mom of Rev. Adalphie Johnson, Attorney Marcy Dunlap, son in law Mr. Joseph Dunlap and adopted daughter Judonna Grant. She is also the grandmother of Imani Johnson, Norah Dunlap, Isaiah Dunlap, Marion Johnson, and Jaylyn Jones.
